Dr. Trevor Gerlach is a veterinary cardiologist with a research interest in non-domestic species. Dr. Gerlach attended the University of Florida for his undergraduate studies in Wildlife Ecology & Conservation and Animal Science. During this time, he spent several years working as a veterinary technician in the Zoological Department at UF’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital and participating in research projects involving manatees, apes, maned wolves, and other exotic species. He received his veterinary degree as well as aquatic animal & international veterinary certificates from UF before completing a rotating internship at the University of Pennsylvania. Following his internship, he completed an aquatic animal fellowship at UF, during which he helped develop the technique for echocardiography in manatees and evaluated cardiac biomarkers & coagulation in this species. Prior to completing his cardiology residency at the University of Georgia, Dr. Gerlach was the associate veterinarian for Zoo Tampa. Dr. Gerlach has published several manuscripts pertaining to cardiovascular disease in non-domestic species. He has been working with the Great Ape Heart Project since 2014 and currently serves as one of the Cardiac Advisors.
