Dr. Vickie Clyde is the Staff Veterinarian at the Milwaukee County Zoo, home to one of the largest troops of bonobos in North America. She received her DVM from the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, completed an internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at Cornell University and a residency in Zoo and Wildlife Medicine at the University of Florida. After joining the Milwaukee County Zoo, Dr. Clyde became the Veterinary Advisor to the Bonobo SSP in 1998 and has focused her efforts on cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, the two main causes of mortality in adult captive bonobos. The Milwaukee County Zoo performed pioneer work in obtaining echocardiograms on awake and unrestrained bonobos. She co-founded the Bonobo Cardiovascular Database with Leann Beehler, a registered diagnostic cardiac sonographer, and Dr. Sam Wann, an MD cardiologist. Dr. Clyde is a founding member of the Milwaukee Center for Bonobo Conservation and Propagation and is a steering committee member of the Great Ape Heart Project. Dr. Clyde has served as an officer of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians and as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine.
